GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turned 75. So, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
On Oct. 21, 2009, it was a sad day for people in the Triad and in Florida.
On Oct. 19, 2009, seven-year-old Somer Thompson disappeared while walking home from school near Jacksonville, Florida. Her father, Sam, lived in Graham.
Both parents and the police pled with people for information to bring Thompson home safely.
“You could just cry when you have a child you cant put your hands on and you cant help them. It’s something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.”
Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Officials found Thompson’s body in a Georgia landfill on Oct. 21. The community held a vigil that night to remember the little girl known for bringing people joy.
Police arrested and charged Jarred Harrell with her murder. A judge sentenced him to six life sentences in a Florida prison.
