Vault Visit | School busing court order causes issues

The problem wasn't just a map problem, it was a math problem.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

August 20, 1969 students were preparing to go back to school... But transportation plans were up in the air.

A court order the previous week declared busing annexed students to city schools was unconstitutional unless students all over the city were granted the busing.

So school systems were left scrambling to figure out how to get thousands of students to school.

"It would affect about 4700 hundred students here. We have requested it and we are hopeful the stay would be granted that it would be granted in time for us to operate buses by next Thursday which is registration day."

The problem wasn't just a map problem, it was a math problem.

The school districts didn't own enough buses to make the transportation work.

And the state said state-owned buses couldn't be used for the busing.
