GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
Sept. 4, 1968, was two months before that year's presidential election.
The parties had just selected their candidates: Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey, and George Wallace.
So WFMY News 2's Al Harrington asked people in Burlington, Greensboro, and High Point who they thought would win.
"In the 3 cities, we talked with 55 prospective voters, 18 said they had no choice at this time. of those expressing a choice, 16 said Wallace, 11 Nixon and 11 said Humphrey. when asked who they thought would win most of them said Nixon or Humphrey, with Wallace coming in third with only five votes."
Of course, we now know that Richard Nixon went on to win that election and carry North Carolina.
He becomes the country's 37th president.
