GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
On June 23, 1996, the Olympic Torch was passing through the Triad.
Marty Sheets lit the temporary flame.
He was one of 82 community members, ages 12 to 80, who had the honor of being torchbearers.
Thousands of people lined the streets to see the torch as it made its way through Greensboro.
The torch route included North Carolina A&T, the War Memorial Stadium, Cone Hospital, The Civil Rights Center and Museum, And the Greensboro Coliseum.
Wfmy News 2's anchor Lee Kinard and Vice President of Community Affairs Shirley Frye both also served as torchbearers.
The overall torch relay happened over 12 weeks and covered more than 16,000 miles as the torch made its way to Atlanta.
