GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
On Sept. 8, 1993, WFMY News 2 got a look inside the North Carolina Zoo's newest exhibit!
The Sonora Desert Dome's animals included rattlesnakes, road runners and a Gila monster.
They're all native to the Sonora Desert of the southwestern United States.
To make the display realistic, the creators used heating and cooling equipment to get rid of the North Carolina humidity and add the desert's dry heat.
The dome and its nocturnal annex cost $4.1 million dollars.
At the time... It was the zoo's first new major exhibit in almost a decade.
