GREENSBORO, N.C. — Last month, WFMY News 2 turned 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
On Sept. 1, 2021, a scary and tragic situation struck a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County high school.
Shots rang out around lunchtime.
Students and teachers hid in their classrooms while police responded.
Parents waited at a nearby shopping center to reunite with their students and some we spoke with described the confusion and chaos.
"I'm just nervous right now because we don't know where our children are, if they're safe. I just don't know what's going at this time," said one parent.
"She's okay but she's scared she said that like police came in with dogs and made them put their hands in the air and then they are all huddled in the dark in the corner because they didn't know where the shooter was," said another.
Students reunited with their parents more than six hours later at a nearby shopping center.
Officials said 15-year-old William Miller Jr. died after being shot by another student.
Police said Miller was the target and only victim.
Police charged fellow student, Maurice Evans Jr., with murder.
In the months and years that followed... The district increased the regular use of metal detectors at middle and high school entrances.
This school year, district officials also introduced eight new OpenGate metal detector systems.
