GREENSBORO, N.C. —  In 2024, WFMY News 2 turns 75! It's our diamond anniversary! As we celebrate our diamond year, we want to take time to highlight diamonds in our community. We know there are people all over the Triad who make their communities shine! Yet again, when WFMY News 2 asked members of the public to nominate their diamonds the response was impressive! But there could only be one winner for March, and that was Nancy Williams.

THE NOMINATION

This is my mother-in-law who has donated countless crochet lap throws to nursing homes, friends and currently donating about every month to the Cone Health Cancer Center at Wesley Long Hospital. It's just adds a little brightness to their day and a little warmth on their legs or shoulders while receiving their chemo treatment. She just turned 88 years old. Thank you for considering her.

Williams' son-in-law Charlie Brown submitted the nomination. He said, "There's so much unpleasant we hear about. She's an inspiration, a hope. [...] Joy and happiness is a wonderful gift. And I think that's what my mother-in-law provides for a lot of people in a difficult time of their life."

ABOUT NANCY WILLIAMS

Nancy Williams is 88 years old, but that doesn't stop her from making a difference. She said about 20 years ago, she wanted a hobby. So a friend taught her to crochet. As she retired and had more time on her hands, she kept those hands busy -- making crochet lap blankets. Rather than keep them for herself or her family, Williams started donating them to people who could really use them. She said, "I knew I wanted them to go to people who really needed them, maybe brighten up their day." Over the years, she has donated lap blankets to area hospice facilities, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and in-home patients. She also drops off blankets monthly to the Cone Health Cancer Center at Wesley Long Hospital

Latonja Gwynn, Administrative Assistant for Support Services at the Cone Health Cancer Center at Wesley Long, said Williams brings no less than 35 blanket a month. Gywnn is one of the people who gets to see people react to getting a blanket.  She said, "I'll present a blanket and say, 'Your good friend Nancy Williams from the community, 88 years old, has taken time to crochet you a blanket and show you some true love.' And they love it." Judith Clausen has been getting treatment at the hospital and has one of Williams' blankets. She said, "It's just something nice to sit over you, on your legs and it felt good. It was like a hug. It was really nice."

Both Gwynn and Clausen say Williams' simple act of crocheting makes a big impact. Clausen said, "Just to have somebody thinking about you is really amazing. I'd like her to know, 'thank you for the hug'." Gwynn echoed the sentiment saying, "We need a lot of Nancys. We need a million Nancies. We do."

For winning the March Community Diamond, Williams received:
