Vault Visit: Greensboro College displays vintage mechanical banks

The banks, dating from the 1800s, served as entertainment and promoted saving.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

November 21, 1968, we got a look at a unique display on-site at Greensboro College.

The school had 25 old mechanical banks on display from the North Carolina Museum of Art.

The banks all date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

In the post-civil war days, mechanical coin banks served as entertainment *and* promoted saving.

“This bank operates this way, it called trick dog. You put a penny in the dog's mouth and press this little lever. And he's supposed to take this penny through the hoop and deposit it in this barrel... Let's see if it works. It works.”
