Vault Visit | First Kernersville Honeybee Festival

Vendors sold locally produced honey and other goods, while kids got to check out farm equipment.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Last month, WFMY News 2 turned 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On Sept. 20, 1975, a special event was dedicated to our state insect -- the honey bee!

This was the inaugural Kernersville Honeybee Festival.

The event featured music, dancing and of course... bees!

Vendors sold locally produced honey and other goods, while kids got to check out farm equipment.

Seems like everyone in attendance had a great time.

The Honeybee Festival came about as a way to honor Kernersville town employee Brady Mullinax.

He's the person who started the effort to get the honey bee named North Carolina's state insect.

The Honeybee Festival still happens annually in Kernersville.

This year it was on August 17th-- which was World Honeybee Day.
