GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
Today, we get a peek at police work in 2001.
Greensboro police K-9, Rex, got hit by a car while chasing a suspect.
He was expected to be okay.
So WFMY News 2 talked to GPD officers about the life of a police K-9.
"Police dogs have a dangerous job... they're often in situations where they don't have control of the situation around them. I think if you could interview the dog they'd tell you they'd rather be working than sitting at home," said an officer.
The K-9s can be trained to search for drugs, suspects, explosives or weapons.
Our team got to see Oso, the Czech shepherd, getting some practice finding contraband in a car.
Another dog, Doc, had no problem finding the weapon our team found in the woods.
GPD started using K-9s in 1985. Right now, the department has 15 total K-9s serving in three different divisions.
They have also worked protecting presidents and dignitaries when they come to town!
