Vault Visit | Hurricane Hazel hits North Carolina

It was a category four storm when it hit the coast in 1954.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turned 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the News 2 vault.

On Oct. 15, 1954, a hurricane made history along the Carolina coast.

Hurricane Hazel hit North Carolina as a Category 4 storm.

It's the only Category 4 to ever hit the Carolina coast.

The storm came ashore along the North and South Carolina border.

Storm surge combined with high tide meant extremely a lot of water and flooding.

For example, only five of Long Beach, North Carolina's 357 buildings remained after the storm.

Nineteen people died and hundreds of others were injured.

Hazel destroyed 15,000 homes and damaged 40,000 others.
