HIGH POINT, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75!
To celebrate, we're opening the News 2 Vault to show you some of our favorite stories over the last 75 years.
On November 30, 1999, some students at Union Hill Elementary in High Point received a very special visit at school when a Black Hawk helicopter landed on campus.
It didn't take long for the school's fifth graders to climb aboard. The goal was to students excited about science.
"They're very excited, as you can tell," a Union Hill teacher said at the time. "They were so excited when they saw the helicopter land, most of them. And even I have never seen a helicopter up close."
The visit was part of an initiative called the Star-Base Program. It helped the National Guard and teachers give students hands-on science experiences.
