GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
On April 2, 1990, Greensboro parents were talking about magnet schools!
The Greensboro city school district announced plans to expand the magnet program for the following school year.
The application process was first-come, first-serve. So dozens of parents lined up to get their kids into the schools they desired.
"For my children, they are very right-brained learners and they need more learning options, they need more hands-on activities. I know this about them, I want an open school."
Magnet schools weren't necessarily new in 1990.
Erwin Elementary and Peeler Elementary offered open education in the early 1970's.
By the early 1990s, Greensboro City Schools got a federal grant to open Brooks Global Studies.
Today... Guilford County Schools offers 48 choice schools and 66 programs that prepare students for the jobs of the future.
