Vault Visit | People offer opinions on Republican nominees

WFMY News 2 polled people on the street about who they would choose to be their nominee.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

August 6, 1968, the talk of the town was elections.

It was the week of the Republican National Convention and WFMY News 2 polled people on the street about who they would choose to be their nominee.

The contenders were former Vice President Richard Nixon, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller and California Governor Ronald Reagan.

"Who's your choice?" We asked. "Not a one of them," one man replied.

"Nelson Rockefeller I hope. If I've got to vote Republican, that's who I want to vote for," said another.

"I think Ronald Reagan would have a good chance. He decided he was going to run. Between him and Wallace."

"I don't like any of the choices I have this year, Republican or Democratic," said one woman.

"Probably Nixon I would say."

At the convention, Nixon was the party's nominee with his vice presidential candidate being Spiro Agnew.

In the actual election, Nixon and Agnew defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey, and the Independent nominee, former Alabama governor George Wallace to become the country's 37th president.
