On July 27, 2008, the Triad and the nation were in a tough economy.
But one local merchant said she wasn't seeing a slump... Instead... She saw a business boost!
Mary Beth Jensen owned Friendly Pets.
She said sales always go up during the summer.
But that summer, she sold twice as many dogs as she had the year before.
"People are staying home. They are looking for something to enrich their lives at home without spending money on gas, traveling to the beach, or spending the money on a condo. Let's just stay home this summer and get a puppy," said Jensen.
Her results were interesting because communities nationwide were reporting lower pet adoption rates.
Food pantries were also seeing more requests for free pet food.
