Vault Visit | Dan Rather goes on air for the final time

The CBS Evening News host spent 24 years as anchor, the longest run of any evening news anchor ever.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the  News 2 vault.

March 9, 2005, was the end of an era for the CBS Evening News.

That was the day Dan Rather completed his final broadcast as anchor of CBS Evening News.

His 24-year tenure was the longest run of any evening news anchor in history.

The noted newsman covered virtually every major event in the world over the course of his career.

His retirement came a couple of months after he reported on forged documents on President Bush's National Guard record that CBS failed to authenticate.

The 92-year-old still discusses current events via a newsletter and his "X" account.
