On Oct. 5, 1993, people celebrated racing legend Dale Earnhardt.

Earnhardt's hometown of Kannapolis held 'Dale Earnhardt Day'.

People gathered to make an 'E' that could be seen from the sky and Earnhardt's number three black Chevy sat on display. The day featured cars and music. The city even named a main road after him.

In his career, Earnhardt won a record-tying seven NASCAR championships.

He died after crashing during the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001. He was 49 years old.
