Vault Visit | Barber shows off new invention

He designed a machine for dyeing hair that used a vacuum cleaner.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year...WFMY News 2 turned 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On Sept. 13, 1968, WFMY News 2 talked to a man who was a barber and an inventor!

Bill Watkins worked at the Bus Station Barber Shop.

He designed a machine for dyeing hair that used a vacuum cleaner. He said he came up with the idea and just started tinkering to make it work!

His first patent application was denied, but he took it to Washington and did a demonstration on a patent office official.

As you can see... it worked! And it didn't make a mess! So, they approved his patent.

Watkins also invented a clipper that worked with a vacuum, a special kind of comb, and a child's barber seat.
