Vault Visit: North Carolina Department of Justice banned Joe Overman from doing contracting work

Homeowners said Joe Overman took thousands of dollars from them and either did shoddy work or didn't do any work at all.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

October 24th, 2016, the 2 Wants to Know team shared a warning for anyone looking for a contractor.

His name was Joe Overman. At least a dozen homeowners reached out to the 2 Wants to Know team. They said Overman took thousands of dollars from them and either did shoddy work or didn't do any work at all.

“This is the worst workmanship that I've seen on anything in my life that I've ever had done. I don't know how he sleeps at night. I'd be so embarrassed.”

“I could've just taken $2,000 and put it in the trashcan for the work I got from Mr. Overman.”

2 Wants to Know reached out to Overman's attorney. He had no comment.

The State Department of Justice also opened an investigation into Overman.

By the end of 2016, the state banned Overman from doing any work in the state of North Carolina. Overman died the following year.

But in 2018, we followed up with one of Overman's victims. Another local roofing company had stepped in and repaired his roof for free.

If you're going to hire a contractor, here are a few things to know. First, get at least three bids. Look at their Better Business Bureau rating. Create a written contract. Never pay more than 10% down or $1,000 - whichever is less. And never pay in cash.
