Vault Visit | ABSS discovers mold growing in schools

We didn't know it at the time, but that was just the beginning.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault

We're not going back too far today.

Aug. 4, 2023, was the first time we heard about mold at an Alamance Burlington school.

School district officials said the mold had been found during summer cleaning two weeks prior.

Leaders said it came from a broken compressor in an HVAC unit.

They said it wasn't black mold and that it wasn't toxic.

But they noted it would cost more than $650,000 to fix the problem and clean the classrooms.

We didn't know it at the time, but that was just the beginning.

One month later, the district announced mold test results.

They found that 29 schools had been impacted by mold... With 16 campuses having toxic mold found on them.

The district delayed the start of the school year while crews finished remediation.

The district is still dealing with the financial impacts of the mold situation.
