The PlayStation 5 Pro is set to release this November.

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Confirming months of rumors and leaks, Sony officially announced its new PlayStation 5 Pro console during a technical presentation delivered Tuesday morning.

The PS5 Pro is set to release on Nov. 7, and it will retail at $699.99. Sony is promising a much more powerful version of its PS5 console, which has already sold nearly 60 million units since its initial debut in 2020.

What exactly sets the PS5 Pro apart from the PS5? According to console lead architect Mark Cerny, who hosted the technical presentation unveiling the console, it comes down to three main components.

The first is an upgraded graphics processing unit (GPU) that promises up to 45% faster rendering and an overall smoother gameplay experience. This new, bigger GPU (67% larger than the normal PS5's) will allow the PlayStation 5 Pro to play games at a consistent benchmark of 4K resolution at 60 frames a second.

The second is the addition of more powerful ray tracing technology. According to Nvidia, ray tracing is "a rendering technique that can realistically simulate the lighting of a scene and its object by rendering physically accurate reflections, refractions, shadows and indirect lighting." Ray tracing is already available on the current PS5, but PlayStation says the Pro will allow "rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console."

Finally, advancements in artificial intelligence have allowed Sony to create their own AI-driven upscaling system, titled PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR. This is a similar technology to what Nvidia's DLSS technology, which is utilized by many modern gaming PCs.

In terms of storage, the PlayStation 5 Pro will feature a 2TB SSD. It will not come a disc drive, though one can be purchased separately on Sony's website.

Preorders are set to begin Sept. 26.
