NC A&T alumni featured in 'The Color Purple' share their experience

Reginald Johnson and Joshua Suiter reflect on their time on the set of 'The Color Purple'.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — While you are certainly aware of The Color Purple currently in theaters, you probably didn't know that some NC A&T representation is in the film.

Reginald Johnson ('13) and Joshua Suiter ('22) spoke about how monumental this opportunity was for them.

Johnson is a principal dancer in the final scene of the film. He also acted and danced in a stage version of The Color Purple while he was at NC A&T.

"It's a huge honor and responsibility at the same time to be able to say, "I came through those hallways, walked those campus grounds, and look at what I've been able to accomplish for not just myself, but for all of us."

Suiter says he received overwhelming support and feedback after posting, what he considered "just a background role" to social media.

"In my mind, I was like, "This is just a background role, I'm going to post it just to post it," but the feedback, support, and people texting me hoping to find me, even in knowing that you might not see me," Suiter said.

Johnson and Suiter also shared their experiences on set.

"Once we got to the set, all of the elements [came together], with costuming, hair, makeup, and the set itself," Johnson said.

Suiter said he was approached by a star while on set.

"I was acting like I was on a date with a young lady, and we were building our scene, having some fun with it, doing some acting methods that I picked up overtime, and at the end, Halle (Bailey) comes over," Suiter shared.

As well as appearing in the film together, Johnson and Suiter both served as Mr. NC A&T during their time on campus.

The new musical is out in theaters everywhere.
