WS/FCS announces it will not be counting absences at the start of the new school year

But, parents are expected to work with the district.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — As you might remember, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education approved changing the calendar for the 2024 – 25 school year.

The first day of school for students will be Monday, Aug. 12, 2024, and the last day will be Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Students will be off for winter break between Friday, Dec. 20, 2024, and Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, a whole two weeks earlier than in past years.

Because of this, the district announced it will not count absences for students who miss school at the start of the year. However, parents are expected to work with the district and let someone know their plan.

“We kindly request that parents work with their school, if they feel like the new calendar presents a problem at the beginning of the year. The superintendent said students wouldn’t be marked absent because they aren’t marked present until they actually show up for their first day. Thus, the reason you should work with your school so we know what to expect," said a WS/FCS spokesperson.
