Vault Visit | NC A&T students sit at whites-only lunch counter

On February 1, 1960, 4 NC A&T students dared to sit down for what was right.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75 and to celebrate, we're opening the News 2 Vault.

Today is February 1st, so it's no surprise today's visit is footage from the Greensboro sit-in movement in 1960.

February 1st was the day 4 young men from North Carolina A&T took a standby sitting down at the 'white's only' Woolworth's lunch counter.

They refused to move until they were served, staying at the counter.

Their actions are credited with launching what became known as the sit-in movement.

Men and women including high school students, returned to the counter day after day for months. People also picketed and demonstrated outside the store in shows of solidarity with those sitting inside.

The sit-ins and demonstrations continued until Woolworths integrated the counter in July of 1960.
