Snow Covered Storm Drains Cause Potential Concern

"I would say the depth of the snow, the volume of the snow," Robby Stone, the High Point public service director said.

GREENSBORO, NC — If you aren't paying attention, it isn't hard to miss them; snow covered storm drains. At first glance, it might not seem like an issue, but with the heavy snowfall the Triad has seen, it is quite the opposite.

"I would say the depth of the snow, the volume of the snow," Robby Stone, the High Point Public Service Director said. "Typically we can come through and plow the snow, our equipment will easily plow through it, but this, the depth of it, the weight of it has been a little bit different."

If you drive throughout High Point and Greensboro, a majority of the storm drains are covered by snow. And with the chance of rain this coming Friday, it causes some concern for minor flooding on several roads throughout the Triad.

"We do have some concerns the drains being covered could create some blocked areas for water to flow into," Stone said. "We do want to caution folks to slow down in areas where water would normally drain off the street. There may be some ponding or standing water."

Not only do these storm drains cause a potential hazard in the snow conditions, but the inability to see where can cause serious injury. Natisha Poindexter lives in High Point, and nearly fell into a storm drain in the midst of all the snow.

"I was walking up the street, and the snow was so thick and I couldn't see anything," Poindexter said. "So I was walking and my right leg went sliding and I almost went down the hole."

Poindexter and other High Point neighbors told WFMY News 2 the inability to snow plow smaller neighborhoods has caused a large concern to resume normal day-to-day activities.

"I know that my neighbors just dug their car out Tuesday," Katie Hawkins, a High Point resident said. "So I think that it's been affecting pretty much everyone on this street."

Whether your neighborhood has been plowed or not, city officials urge all residents to remain patient as crews are working overtime to clear both the storm drains and main roadways throughout the Triad.
