People in Smithfield keeping spirits up despite being inundated by water

Positivity is helping one woman in Smithfield cope with the devastation wrought by Florence.

For the first time in days, the sun shone down on North Carolina. Flooding can be seen and felt throughout our great state despite Florence dissipating into a tropical depression.

In Smithfield at the Neuse River, residents were all smiles at the diner there after days of dealing with what Florence brought their way.

"It was kind of scary this go-around because of what we got with Matthew and I have never seen that much water in my life whenever Matthew came through," diner Lindsay Hall said to WFMY News 2.

She added that she was happy to see the brighter days ahead.

"It's looking really pretty out there with all this sunshine," she said.

Although the rain lightened and the wind has stopped in Smithfield, the storm's effects are prevalent. Areas like the Neuse River are still flooded with widespread standing water.

The Johnston County Emergency Management Office has been keeping in close contact with the National Weather Service. The meteorological organization said the river crested at nearly 19 feet while the water is at least no longer rising.

"We are just blessed that it was not like Matthew," Hall said. "I have a sunny disposition about a lot of things. you have to be positive in this world."
