People Recovering From Greensboro Tornado Damage Prep for Hurricane Florence

Volunteers are working to get those affected by the tornadoes last year ready for Hurricane Florence this year.

While Hurricane Florence grumbles closer and closer to making landfall along the southeastern edge of the North Carolina coast, many in the Piedmont Triad are preparing for the expected winds and rainfall. For some, however, preparation can be hard - especially when you're still recovering from another storm.

Last spring, tornadoes tore through the area and some of those who were affected are still working their way back from the hardship. Blue tarps can be seen covering homes near Hampton Elementary in Greensboro and act as a constant reminder of the severe storms.

Mary Webster told WFMY News 2 that just after the tornado hit, the days were pretty hectic. She said she remembers it well.

"The tornado had blown a walnut tree down," she explained. "Thank God it didn't come this way, but it fell backwards and blew my shed into the fallen tree and then the awnings blew off."

While the destruction is fresh in her mind, it's not what she remembers most about the days after the storm. Sure, branches remain down and serve as a constant reminder, but something else sticks out much more to her.

"People just came out and gave us a helping hand," she said.

And that helping hand hasn't left. Even on Thursday, there were volunteers helping Webster. There are volunteers working on Webster's house. They're with Community Housing Solutions and she added she's also gotten help from Samaritan Purse.

"I figured I'd do something a little more productive than just sit around," explained Ashley Rumley to WFMY News 2. "I feel like I owe it to people to give back because I have it so good."

While Webster needs plenty of work done before the new storms roll through, she said it's her faith that helps keep her going.

"I'm not really worried because what's going to happen is going to happen," Webster said. "I'm just putting my trust in God."
