GREENSBORO, NC -- High winds struck North Carolina on Friday from the mountains to the beaches. Here in the Piedmont, downed trees and power lines were common, with thousands of customers losing power.
The highest winds recorded were in the mountains. Grandfather Mountain recorded a remarkable 102 mph wind gust at their Mile High Swinging Bridge weather station. High winds over 60 mph were common from Boone to Galax and north into Virginia as well.
Downed trees blocked roads in many Triad counties, and lead to significant power outages. At one point, more than 20,000 customers were without power in the Piedmont and more than 50,000 in the state of North Carolina. Surry County 911 reported receiving 700 calls in just a 12 hour period.
At the coast, high winds overturned a tractor trailer in Chowan County. Coastal flooding submerged roads in the Outer Banks.
The Chowan County Sheriff's Office captured photos of a Pepsi tractor trailer blown over on the Chowan River Bridge in Edenton, NC.
