The University of Maryland-Baltimore County is the first No. 16 seed men’s college basketball team to beat a No. 1 seed after its 74-54 win over Virginia.
Virginia entered the 2018 NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed after going 31-2 this season, including 20-1 in ACC competition.
UMBC next plays Kansas State on Sunday in Charlotte.
Here’s a look at the numbers behind the Retrievers’ victory over Virginia:
1 win - 135 losses
No. 16-seeded teams now have a 1-135 record against No. 1 seeds in the 80-year history of the NCAA Tournament. Only eight teams competed in the first NCAA Tournament played in 1939.
The field grew to 16 teams from 1951-1952. It increased from 32 teams in 1975 to 64 teams in 1985.
When including the play-in games, there are now 68 teams invited to patriciate in the NCAA Tournament. The 68-team field began in 2011.
Second NCAA Tournament appearance
The Retrievers played in only one NCAA Tournament game prior to Friday night. UMBC lost 66-47 to Georgetown on March 21, 2008.

This date marked UMBC’s only other win against a Power Five conference team. The Retrievers beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 66-64.

UMBC made history Friday night, but two decades ago, the No. 16 seed Harvard women beat No. 1 seed Stanford. It’s the only other time a No. 16 seed beat a No. 1 seed in the men's or women's NCAA Tournament.

$10,000
The amount represents UMBC's men's basketball coach Ryan Odom's bonus for beating Virginia. Odom got a $7,500 bonus for the Retrievers winning the America East Conference tournament, which guaranteed UMBC's ticket into the field of 68.
From here, Odom is eligible to receive:
- $10,000 more if UMBC advances to the Sweet 16.
- $10,000 more if UMBC advances to the Elite Eight.
- $20,000 more for reaching the Final Four.
- $20,000 more for reaching the championship game.
- $20,000 more for winning the national championship.
$92.7 million vs. $12.9 million
Data from the U.S. Department of Education shows the University of Virginia’s operating budget for its athletic department is about $92.7 million compared to UMBC’s at about $12.9 million.
There’s an even larger disparity between the two schools in recruiting budgets. For its men’s athletic teams, Virginia has about $1.16 million compared to UMBC’s at $90,964.

The number marks the number of teams in Division I men’s basketball.
Entering Friday, Virginia was the only team that had not allowed more than 70 points in a game this season.
The Cavaliers allowed 74 points to UMBC.

This is the total number of points the Retrievers scored in the second half, which was 1 point shy of how many Virginia scored in the entire game.
