An island that formed off the coast of North Carolina last June has once again disappeared.
According to The Weather Channel’s Pam Wright, the mass of land dubbed Shelly Island due to the abundance of seashells collected on its shore has disappeared following a series of storms in the Atlantic.
Those storms included hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria. Shelly Island was approximately a mile long and three football fields wide and was located just off Cape Point in Buxton. Shortly after its discovery, questions emerged as to who exactly owned the newfound island.
David Hallac, superintendent of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore said Shelly Island belonged to the state, but because the cape is constantly changing due to storms and strong currents it could be gone as quickly as it appeared.
