White House Releases Preferred Measures On Gun Control

President Trump is backing off raising the age limit for gun purchases and wants to ensure school safety by focusing on mental health issues and providing gun training for teachers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The White House has officially announced its preferred measures on gun control.

President Trump is backing off raising the age limit for gun purchases and wants to ensure school safety by focusing on mental health issues and providing gun training for teachers.

President Trump commended the NRA at a rally in Western Pennsylvania before unveiling his new proposal.

“We have to harden our schools, not soften them up,” said President Trump.

President Trump’s plan would provide for “rigorous” firearms training for some teachers and urges Congress to pass a bill to make the federal background check system more effective.

He’s also backing off raising federal age limits on rifle purchases, like the AR-15 that was used in the Parkland Shooting.

President Trump is sticking by an idea he floated during a bipartisan meeting that would allow states to pass court orders to remove guns from people who are threats.

Secretary of Education Betsy Devos is heading up a new federal commission on school violence.

She recently spoke with Lesley Stahl for 60 Minutes.

STAHL: Do you feel a sense of urgency?

DEVOS: Yes.

STAHL: 'Cause this sounds like talking. Instead of acting--

DEVOS: No, there is a sense of urgency indeed.
