GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Right now our station generator cranking. We turned it on on Thursday night just in case those high winds knocked out the power.
So far, no outages here at WFMY News 2, but others in the Triad haven't been as fortunate.
"If you woulda come in this morning and said I'll bet you ten dollars that tree will fall in this wind before the day is over, I woulda said give me your 10 dollars," said Eddie Lashley who lives in Greensboro.
Unfortunately for Eddie, he would have been on the losing end of that bet, because a tree did fall in his yard, and it took some power lines with it.
"I heard something go 'bam!' like a humongous firecracker," said Lashley.
"When I got back at about 10 -- I noticed Duke Energy was here, the power was off -- and the tree had fallen across the road down there," said Sheila Bailey, who lives across the street.
With winds gusts peaking between 40 and 50 miles per hour -- power outages have happened all over the Piedmont due to downed trees.
"With the wetness I've been told with a lot of the pine trees, that they'll come over pretty easy. It doesn worry me with these larger trees -- I just don't want them to hit my house," said Bailey.
"Yeah, they'll mess your house up in a heartbeat. I don't wish that on nobody -- especially me, because I ain't able to take care of it," laughed Lashley.
Schools had problems with the wind, too.
Southwest Elementary, Middle and High Schools in High Point all lost power because of a downed tree.
