Triad School Boards Make Snow Make-Up Days Decision

A number of school systems report meeting or exceeding the state-mandated 1,025 hours of instructional time requirement.

School districts in the Triad are considering whether to keep or cancel their snow make-up days for the year. This year, students lost up to six days from school due to weather-related closing.

Alamance-Burlington School System's Board of Education forgave some of their make-up days allotted to accommodate inclement weather in January.

The Board Of Education for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools discussed the issue at their public meeting held Tuesday at Northwest Middle School in Winston-Salem.

UPDATE | The Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools' Board voted to forgive two make-up snow days. And since they have enough hours in, the last day of school is now June 11.

Guilford County Schools planned their discussion for Wednesday at 5:30 pm. The meeting will take place in the district's board room located at 712 N.Eugene St., Greensboro.

According to state law, North Carolina Public Schools are required to have at least 1,025 hours of instructional time. Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, the state mandated that the start date for a school's academic year is to be no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26, The recommended end date no later than the Friday closest to June 11. For this academic year though, the end date was June 12 with schools having until Friday, June 15 to make-up for any lot days and shut doors for the academic year.

Both school districts say they meet the requirements without using the already scheduled makeup days with were allotted to the end of the school year. Alamance-Burlington School System reports exceeding the requirement.

Guilford County Schools is considering forgiving the snow days allotted to June 13 and 14 which would have made June 15, an optional teacher work-day, the very last day of the school year. If the board foregoes the make-up days, the closing day for schools in the district will return to the originally scheduled, Tuesday, June 12.

Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools is considering options for the days of June 12 and 13. If the board decides to forgive those days, the last day of school returns to June 11, which was also its initially slated date.
