Snow In March Means Madness For Schools, Parents and Drivers

Looks like March Madness doesn't only apply to college basketball this year. Here's a look at snow across the Triad and we're only 8 days from the start of spring.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – We’re just days from the start of spring and winter doesn't want to let go, just yet.

Parts of the Triad was blanketed by snow that started as a cold rain for most of us.

ALERT CENTER | Complete closings and delays

NORTHWEST GUILFORD COUNTY

Four inches of snow in Reidsville. From Dennis Merserau.

It was a dangerous day on the roads in Guilford County. A county dispatcher told WFMY News 2's Carly Flynn Morgan they responded to “dozens upon dozens upon dozens” of accidents. Guilford County Schools were closed on Monday and Greensboro City Government shut down early.

We witnessed a steady stream of cars out on roads, but some people decided to stay home.

“I was gonna do some fertilizing of yards today, but this kind of interfered,” said Floyd Moore of Summerfield.

Snow began piling up at his house late Monday morning. He had wanted to get some work done outside, but changed his plans and watched the snow from inside his cozy living room. He doesn’t mind the snow, even in mid-March, but does say he likes to see it go.

“I like it coming this morning and gone this afternoon,” he said laughing.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

WFMY News 2’s Jessica Mensch followed the snow trail to Rockingham County. In downtown Reidsville a lot of businesses closed early, due to the weather. She also noted slushy roads in downtown Madison.

South of the Triad in Randolph County, there was less snow accumulating. In the early stages of the system, sleet and rain kept the roads wet in Asheboro. The WFMY News 2's Laura Brache saw mostly sleet and very little snow.

ALAMANCE COUNTY

Alamance County was one of the last places the storm hit before it moved out.

We found students at Elon University already having fun in the snow. We also found Shayna and Marisa Tang of Alamance County who wasted no time getting outside for snow fun including making a snowman, sledding, and a snowball fight.

Business owner, Richard Forrest is cashing in on the cold. He owns a ski shop in Elon and is stocked up on sleds.

"Typically on the first day when it snows nobody comes out, the next day were typically really busy."

He says the storm will be good for the ski slopes out in the western part of the state.
