Quick Burst of Snow Hits Foothills Thursday Afternoon

Some big fluffy flakes fell from the sky in the Foothills, bringing a quick coating Thursday

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Winter can happen fast! Cloudy skies turned snowy in a hurry in the Foothills on Thursday, bringing a burst of snow that turned that ground white in many areas.

If you're in the Triad, you may be wondering what we're talking about? This same system is bringing rain to the Triad cities, but it was just cold enough for some quick snow in places like Wilkes County, Surry County and Stokes County.

A fresh coating of about 1/4" of snow fell at CJ Hickman's house in Wilkesboro, and that snow fell at a very steady clip too from about 1pm through 3pm. Schools let our early for the day in Wilkes County to be safe.

In Mount Airy, the snow fell quickly too, and a coating of snow was seen from the state line to Dobson, mainly sticking to the grass and not so much on the roads. Even so, some slushy spots were enough to cause a few accidents. Schools canceled after school activities for the day.

In Stokes County, some very big snowflakes come down for about an hour. The result was a dusting to a coating of snow in the northern part of the county. Schools played it safe and decided to call off any after school activities as well.

In much of the Triad, we can expect to see some scattered rain showers through the rest of the evening and into the overnight hours. Temperatures will hover around 35 for lows, so widespread slippery travel isn't expected. Still, use caution if you're in any of these areas that saw snow today.

FORECAST:

Tomorrow's a brighter day! Sunshine will return and we'll have highs around 60 for Friday.
