PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Surry County Emergency Services confirms that lightning struck the steeple of Friendly Chapel Church in Pilot Mountain Saturday night. The church was struck twice, causing it to catch fire around 9:51. The fire was under control at 10:44.
EMS says there's significant damage to the roof and the surrounding area where the lightning struck. The building isn't believed to be a total loss. The church is on Friendly Chapel Church Road.
The Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department responded and several other departments in Surry County assisted with the fire.
John Shelton with Surry EMS says that another lightning strike hit a house nearby on Black Mountain Road and took out phone service to some. The house was not damaged.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
