MANTEO, N.C.-- A key highway at the North Carolina Outer Banks will be closed Tuesday — the third straight day — as high winds continue to cause high water at the coast, officials said.
Overwash from the ocean is continuing to cause problems for sections of N.C. 12 while low water levels are causing problems for at least two ferries, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
High winds and the high tide continue to cause flooding issues, days after a nor'easter spun off the East Coast
The National Weather Service has a coastal flood warning in effect until noon Monday in Dare County. The weather service says flooding continues on the ocean side of the Outer Banks in Dare County with tides running 2 feet (0.6 meters) to 3 feet (1 meter) above ground level.
“N.C. 12 is now expected to reopen around Tuesday evening due to the high tides tonight and tomorrow morning which will have chances of bringing over more overwash,” the NCDOT said.
The highway is closed between the Bonner Bridge and Rodanthe, as well as on Ocracoke between Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal. Sand, water, and other debris are also present along other parts of the road.
