RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — The Randolph County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man who stole a woman's minivan by pretending to be her boyfriend's friend.
The sheriff's office said Richard 'Rocky' Anthony Vestal of Asheboro stole a gold Nissan Quest by impersonating someone else.
The investigation started after deputies responded to a stolen car call in the on Sunday. The woman told deputies her van was stolen by someone named Richard Vestal. She said it happened while she was at work at Holiday Tours on Saturday.
Deputies were told Vestal came to Holiday Tours and told her boss that he was her boyfriend and that he needed the keys to her vehicle.
The woman, whose van was taken, saide she was told the same and went to meet Vestal, thinking it was her boyfriend. Vestal told her that her boyfriend gave him permission to borrow the minivan when they met. She gave him the keys and Vestal took the van at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Deputy spoke with the boyfriend who said he never gave Vestal permission to borrow the van and he had only known Vestal for about a week.
He said 'Rocky' had asked about the van at a previous date and he thought that was odd.
Luckily, the incident was caught on the security camera at Holiday Tours, deputies confirm.
The vehicle that Vestal arrived in at Holiday Tours was a gold or tan Dodge Neon passenger car driven by a younger man with medium length brown hair. The driver told deputies Vestal was staying at Ritchie's Motel on Randleman Road in Room 5. Deputies searched the motel but couldn't find Vestal or the vehicle.
Vestal has a 'Skyler' tattoo on his neck.
