Inmate's Plot to Blow Up Alamance Co. Jail Foiled When Letter Mailed to Wrong Address: Sheriff

Investigators say Sean Damion Castorina, who is jail on first degree murder charges, foiled his own plot to escape when a letter with instructions and bomb making ingredients was delivered to the wrong address.

GRAHAM, N.C.(WFMY)-- "The best laid plans of mice and men can often go awry." That's quote from author Robert Burns and the reality of an inmate in the Alamance County Detention Center.

Sheriff Terry Johnson says a plot to blow up the Alamance County Detention Center almost happened but one of the people involved mailed information about the attack to the wrong address and a citizen brought it to the attention of law enforcement.

Investigators say Sean Damion Castorina, who is behind bars facing murder charges in the 2017 death of Harold Dean Simpson, recruited two friend to try and blow up the jail, Shannon Douglas Gurkin and Dakota Lee Marek.

The plan was an attempt for Castorina to escape.

Castorina, Gurkin, and Marek were all arrested Thursday.

The letter contained information and drawings of the jail, sheriff Johnson says. It included instructions on how to make the bomb and what ingredients to buy. The men were told in the letter where exactly to place the bomb device so it would blow a hole in the wall for Castorina to escap, Johnson explained during a news conference.

In addition to the letter mailed to the wrong address, detectives have recorded phone conversations over the jail house phones and evidence collected from inside the inmate’s cell.

Sean Castorina is charged with: Felony Conspiracy, Manufacture/Assemble a Weapon of Mass Destruction, and Attempted Escape from Jail.

Shannon Douglas Gurkin and Dakota Lee Marek are charged with: Malicious Use of an Explosive Device to Damage Property.
