MEBANE, NC - A few months after issuing a recall for 37 million of fire extinguishers, Mebane-based company, Kidde, just recalled thousands of smoke alarms.
The manufacturer is recalling 452,000 smoke alarms due to a manufacturing defect. Kidde says a yellow cap left on during the manufacturing process can cover one of the two smoke sensors, compromising the alarm's ability to detect smoke.
The recall involves Kidde dual-sensor smoke alarms – models PI2010 and PI9010 – sold between September 2016 and January 2018 at Walmart, Menard's, The Home Depot, Amazon.com and other retailers nationwide.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the defect, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Consumers should inspect their smoke alarm to see if a yellow cap is present. If a yellow cap is detected, Kidde says consumers should not attempt to take apart the alarm themselves, but instead should contact Kidde for a free replacement smoke alarm.
If no yellow cap is present, no action is needed.
