Father Charged After Bringing Gun To Kid’s Basketball Game At Proehlific Park

Damian Lavar Jones, 40, had a gun in the parking lot and displayed it in a threatening manner causing people to panic, according to police.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A father of an athlete at Proehlific Park was charged after threatening to use a gun during a basketball tournament.

Greensboro police said the man got into an argument with a dad of another athlete while at the game Sunday.

Damian Lavar Jones, 40, had a gun in the parking lot and displayed it in a threatening manner causing people to panic, according to police. However, no one was injured.

Police said Jones had a valid concealed carry permit but violated the provision of the permit by carrying the weapon while he was on an impairing substance.

He was also charged with consuming a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.

WFMY News 2 talked with Ricky Proehl, owner of Proehlific Park, about how his staff handled the situation.

"The staff handled it wonderfully, I mean the first thing that they did was call 911," said Proehl, "It would scare anybody. You know, you got your kids, and families, so that’s when they came running in and warning people that there was a man out in the parking lot."

He said the incident will prompt changes, including more signs around the property alerting people weapons are not allowed indoors, plus, more security during big games and tournaments.

The incident still startles parents who attended the tournament.

"My daughter was at the beginning of her game. We probably weren’t in but two minutes, and there are 3 courts. We were in the far corner and all the sudden, a whole crowd of people come running on our court hollering he has a gun," said Angela Nixon, "Nowadays, you just don’t know. You’ve got to be prepared when somebody says there’s a gun, you need to take off or do something to take cover because you never know what’s going to happen."
